The Farmers

The Gooralie Farm was a mixed farming property near Goondiwindi, Australia. After more than 10 years of producing natural lamb and beef, the family, Mark and Charisse Ladner, decided to establish a free range breeding herd to produce natural pork in 1999. The family believes giving animals a better life flows on to the taste of the meat, so they endeavour to grow their own grain to feed their pigs a natural, nutritiously balanced diet free of chemical residue, antibiotics, growth hormones or feed from genetically modified origin. Their desire to raise pigs in a stress-free environment with a focus on animal welfare practices has even earned them the APIQ Free Range Certificate.

The Farms

Borrowdale free range pork is sourced from farmers run by families. All of the farms are born from the desire to raise pigs in a stress-free environment while also focusing on animal welfare practices. The farms offer an ideal home for their pigs to display their natural behaviors such as rooting and foraging. Water and food is always accessible, insulated huts filled with deep straw bedding for comfort are also provided.

The Pigs

Pigs are very social animals, so they're raised in large groups. On all of Borrowdale's traditional farms the pigs are able to live out all of their natural behaviors in a natural environment. To ensure a stress-free and happy life, the pigs don't only have the chance to go out in the wild whenever they like, they are also provided with shelter and comfortable bedding to rest when needed. And wallowing, as well as playing in mud, which is a pig's natural behavior, is also possible at all times.

The Feed

The 10,000 acre farm is an ideal home for the pigs to be able to freely truffle and access water and food whenever they like. All pigs are fed a well-balanced diet to closely match those of their wild ancestors. (Pigs can’t survive only on grass, so there will never be grass-fed pork but pastured pork, meaning they were raised on an open pasture.) All feed is of of Australian non-GMO origin.
