This wakame comes from the beautiful Pacific coast of Miyagi prefecture in northern Japan, and is known for its thick, springy texture. The conveniently pre-cut seaweed makes it easy to add just the amount you need to your hot miso soup or refreshing seafood salad.
This wakame is cultivated in Oi Bay, where mineral-rich mountain water flows in from the Kitakami River. This pristine mountain water is absorbed by the seaweed, resulting in thick, firm leaves with a springy texture, and it is sold in markets across Japan under the premium "Jusan-hama Wakame" brand. The cultivation practices are ASC-certified as well, meaning they have been approved by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council for environmentally safe and sustainable methods.

Fish and Planet, the vendor of this seaweed, collaborates with small-scale, family-run fishing and aquaculture businesses to promote sustainable and socially responsible practices. The wakame is produced by a group of 19 young wakame and kombu seaweed producers from Jusanhama, Ishinomaki City in Miyagi, Japan. After the Great East Japan Earthquake destroyed all their aquaculture facilities in March 2011, many people left the area, but these young producers and their families banded together determined to revitalize aquaculture on the land and sea inherited from their ancestors. Facing global declines in fishery resources and severe environmental issues, the group obtained ASC certification to support their commitment to sustainable and responsible aquaculture and to preserve the rich marine environment for future generations.
